Nvidia’s recent acquisition of Berlin based Mental Images (the maker of the Mental Ray render engine) let’s us speculate if this is going to bring us a step closer to hardware accelerated real time global illumination?
Clearly this move will have some implications to the architectural visualisation and simulation market.
The Mental Ray render engine ships as part of most major 3d software packages (e.g. AutocCAD, Revit, 3ds Max, Maya, XSI, CATIA …)
Nvidia currently holds an 86% share in the workstation graphics market.
